Gents MICROMA (Circa 1976)
Brand new ex-shop stock, gents very rare LCD digital wrist watch with stop watch function made by Microma (Now Intel Communications Corp. maker of the famous Intel Pentium computer chip) in 1976 and was one of the first LCD watches on the market. With a high visibility Liquid Crystal Display, set into a silvered face with gold gilt edging. This watch is in pristine condition and comes complete with all of the original papers and guarantee documentation and also comes with a lovely display case. One of the company directors at Intel, Gordon Moore, still wears his Micromar Watch to this very day. Convinced that digital watches would become a new high-tech business requiring innovative microchips, Intel acquires Microma. As Gordon Moore recalls: "We started off selling watches for about $150 retail, which was something like a dollar a minute for how long they lasted. And a regular agenda item at Intel board meetings essentially used to be members bringing back their watches to be repaired." When competitors began selling digital watches for $9.99, Intel phased out of the business in 1978. Moore still wears his Microma watch: "I call this my $15 million watch.". A rare survivor, It would be virtually impossible to find another one of these that is unused and new.
